The initial reason why I choose to learn Japanese is the language requirement of my department. I might have just intended to read some academic papers in Japanese in my field of study (which is premodern Chinese literature by the way) or do some simple conversations with Japanese scholars and students someday. However, as soon as I start the journey, I find a lot of unexpected fun awaiting me ahead. I am fascinated by the pronunciation as well as the calligraphy. The way in which Japanese captures the decency of life and depth of emotions is thrilling. The difficulty of memorizing Japanese vocabulary notwithstanding, I look forward to taking Japanese class every morning when I get up. I am sure the journey will be more fruitful!
